How to make cyanotypes
Step 1:
-collect
supplies: Material to print
on (paper, other fibrous surfaces)
Solution
A, Solution B (potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium)
Brush, tray to coat surface on, tray to rinse in, a flat surface and a
clear flat surface, gloves?,
something to transfer to cyanotype surface (film transparency, leaves, bugs,
etc.), a timer
Water
Source of UV light
(Next two steps
done in a room with very little light)
Step 2:
-mix
the chems: Mix equal parts of solution A with solution B
Step 3:
-coating
the paper (or other thing): Coat the surface you are using with the chemical mixture. Put on nice and
even. Allow to dry…in the DARK.
Step 4:
-printing:
Place your “stuff” (transparency or leaves and things) on the coated surface
and sandwich between your flat surfaces, with the clear surface on the top so
that you can see your image or “things”. Place under your source of UV light
and expose for proper amount of time (time determined by test strips)
TEST
STRIPS: cover all of your image
excluding
a sliver at top, expose for thirty
seconds,
move covering to expose a new sliver,
continue
with this process until all of your
image
is exposed. This will give you a sample
of
what exposure times are necessary.
Step 5:
-processing
and drying: To process, rinse in water. Next, dry that sheet off. (hang or lay
somewhere nice)
Step 6:
-admiration:
Look at how cool things look in blue and white!
